Michael Chazen is a criminal defense lawyer in New Jersey. He has handled hard to win cases in State and Federal courts for over 20 years with great success. He is committed to a vigorous defense and obtaining the best possible result for his clients. His clients have included doctors, executives, and government employees, including a secret service agent. Most of his clients, however, are ordinary working people. Here are some successful results obtained in the last 5 years:
Defendant charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for illegal purpose. Mr. Chazen was retained and rejected state’s plea offer calling for several years in jail. Case was tried before a jury. Even after seeing defendant’s videotaped confession where he admitted to being the shooter, the jury still found him NOT GUILTY of all charges except one minor offense. Judge imposed no jail and no probation.
Defendant indicted on charges of first degree aggravated sexual assault. State offered a plea deal calling for substantial jail time - which two prior lawyers recommended. Mr. Chazen was retained and substituted in as new attorney for defendant. All of the prosecution’s plea offers were then rejected. Case was tried before a jury for two weeks. Jury deliberated several days - and found defendant NOT GUILTY on all charges! This was an especially hard case as the defendant had a record, which included a first degree conviction, received when he was represented by a different lawyer.
Defendant indicted for illegal counterfeiting. Defendant had extensive prior criminal record. Plea offer called for substantial jail time. Another lawyer advised defendant to take a deal and do time in jail. Mr. Chazen was retained as counsel, took over the defense, and advised defendant to reject plea offer and proceed to trial by jury. After jury was selected and before verdict, case was resolved with NO JAIL, a small fine, and probation.
Defendant indicted by grand jury on charge of first degree attempted murder. Defendant faced 10-20 years in jail. State’s evidence was very strong. Defendant spoke very little English. Prior counsel urged defendant to take plea deal under which he would serve many years in jail. Mr. Chazen was then retained and in two months negotiated a plea agreement under which defendant received only probation - NO JAIL.
Defendant indicted on first degree kidnapping and related charges - facing up to 20 years in jail. State’s plea offer required substantial prison time. Mr. Chazen rejected plea offer on behalf of his client and filed pre-trial application to dismiss the indictment on timing technicality. State opposed dismissal of any charges. Judge’s decision: Application granted - ALL CHARGES DISMISSED! (State said they would appeal - but never did.)
Defendant charged with filing fraudulent insurance claim resulting in payment of $295,000 - a 2nd degree crime. He faced ten years in jail. Final plea offer was 3 years in jail. Mr. Chazen was then retained as lead counsel for the defense. On the day of jury selection, case was resolved with the state allowing defendant to apply for Pre Trail Intervention (PTI), conditioned on payment of $30,000 in up front restitution. PTI is a program which allows for DISMISSAL OF ALL CHARGES WITH NO CRIMINAL RECORD.
Defendant charged with possession with intent to distribute over 100 pounds of illegal drugs, facing 20 years in jail. Prosecution’s best plea offer called for several years in jail and was rejected. Case was tried before a jury for several weeks. Jury was hung and judge declared mistrial. Instead of a retrial, defendant was offered and accepted PROBATION.
Defendant was convicted of various charges related to aggravated assaults while represented by another attorney. He was sentenced to 45 years in jail. Mr. Chazen was subsequently hired to handle an appeal for the defendant. The appellate court REVERSED THE DEFENDANT’S CONVICTION.
